Printer not working with new MacBook Air

New MacBook Air M3 chip Sequoia 15.2 won't communicate with Brother HL-2270DW Printer. This printer will work with a MacBook Air, same OS, with M2 chip. Suggestions?

MacBook Air 15″, macOS 15.2

How is your printer connected? USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi (to a router)?

What kind of printer driver are you using on that other Mac? Is the connection method Mac-to-printer the same as for the new Mac?

Brother's support page does not mention drivers for anything newer than macOS 10.15 Catalina (for some models, a Catalina driver has been known to work with a few later versions as well, but that would be experimental).

The specifications indicate that the HL-2270DW can handle PCL6 emulation, so a generic macOS PCL driver could possibly be used.

Thank you for the information.

You may want to try a wireless printer connection to a Wi-Fi router, instead of using USB. Yes, AirPrint is not supported, but that does not rule out a wireless printer connection as such. Without AirPrint support, an appropriate printer driver (generic PCL?) will be needed.

Alternatively, a wired (Ethernet) printer connection to one of the LAN ports of the Wi-Fi router.

Since the old Mac is running the same macOS version and is using the same driver, some kind of hardware handling difference could possibly explain the difficulties with printing from the new Mac. Thus the suggestion to try network printing.

As always, since this is experimental, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files before testing anything.

The new MacBook Air would connect wirelessly to the Wi-Fi router (it does not matter whether the printer is wirelessly connected to the router or is using Ethernet to a LAN port).

Do not change anything on the old Mac for now. In case things still do not work well with the new MacBook Air, that should at least allow you to continue using USB printing from the old computer.

Thank you for the update, Glad to hear that you found a solution, at least temporarily.

Just one thing. If you have a modern (dual-band) router, the following article could perhaps be of interest:

https://help.brother-usa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/73618/~/compatibility-with-5-ghz,-dual-band-wireless-router,-or-mesh-networks

An HL2270DW is listed under the link showing models covered by the text. Renaming/splitting bands may be needed. If applicable/necessary, an Ethernet connection could be used from the printer to the Wi-Fi router instead.

Thanks for the detailed reply and questions. I should have offered more details: setup was usb, same printer driver on both Macs. And you're right, there are no drivers specified for anything beyond macOS 10.15--I had looked up the driver on the Brother site (something else I should have included in my original post), and had called Brother customer service. As AirPrint won't work (see first reply to my post) I will see if PCL6 emulation will do the trick. If not, it looks like a new printer may be in our future. So unnecessary for the little printing we do!

My various attempts at setting up wifi were not successful. But I did reach a staggeringly simple solution: I connected via wifi the new MacBook Air (my wife's) to a different printer I use with my "older" (by one year) MacBook Air. Ideally we like to have two printers but really don't want to purchase another one. As long as this resolution works, we'll use it.

Thank you for your time and suggestions. I'm always open to other ideas.
