I keep getting a ‘safari’ pop up with ‘critical alert’ as a heading, telling me to run a scan immediately to protect my computer. How do I get rid of it? I don’t know where it came from. I’ve obviously clicked on something without realising it. Help!

Download and run the Malwarebytes utility application. The app was designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it. It’s a popular tool among veteran users here in the Community. Run the app and see if it can identify any malware you may have accidentally installed. The free version is probably all you need at this point to identify and quarantine potential problems. Remove what is found from the quarantine.

Those notifications are scams designed to instill fear and separate you from your money.. Your Mac is not being compromised. Ignore and close them.
I believe @Zurarczurx is on the right path. You can silence all Safari notifications in System Settings... > Notifications. But you may also silence only those websites that you've allowed to send notifications.

Have you tried turning off notifications for Safari?
You can manage pop-ups in Safari in Safari > Settings... > Websites tab.

Hi.. all of the suggested stuff is already done. I have just had another one come … up they’re from ressompodouss.com with a security alert saying I have visited an illegal infected website and my Mac is at risk of being infected by viruses, then says I need to do scan. It’s popping up every 5 minutes with a header of Norton Total Security ??
No I haven’t. Won’t that just hide the problem as opposed to delete it? I’m just concerned about my personal data. I just had another one saying my data is being stolen. They’re coming thick and fast !
