Setting limits for system data cache on Apple devices

It is very clear to me that Apple has allowed the allocation of system data to run free. This seems to be particularly true for Apple users who have the ability to upgrade their iCloud services. This is borderline malicious practice. It creates a false impression of lack of storage space. Is there any way to set limits for system data cache to prevent it from taking over all usable storage? If not I will be looking into devices that allow for more user control of data cache.

I doubt he thought you might care about his feelings. And we don't care if you think something else will better meet your needs. Maybe if you had simply asked how to better manage system data, without guns ablazing, including suggesting this is borderline malicious, which it most assuredly is not and then suggesting you'll go to a different platform, you wouldn't have been challenged by anyone. They say you attract more bees with honey than you do with vinegar. Just a thought.......

Just so you know, Samsung, Google, nor any other cell manufacturer has a facility to limit system data from accumulating over time. You're using a phone released in 2017, 8 years ago. Over the long haul, it's not unusual for system data to accumulate. And sometimes over time, that data can include some corruption. If your iPhone's system data has accumulated to the point it is causing operational issues, simply backup your iPhone, then restore it from backup and system data will be restored to normal levels.

Yep, that appeared to have been the issue. Ironically it could have been resolved very quickly as it has on this site before when there was a question about excessive System Data, but there are no limits that can be set on the System Data as asked. The extraneous comments is not typical of a user looking for a solution and going down that path is never the best approach when help is needed.

I should also have pointed out that the authors assertion Apple offering more options to buy more iCloud Storage in no way has anything to do with device storage.

No, Apple uses the extra space to optimize the performance of the phone.

This seems to be particularly true for Apple users who have the ability to upgrade their iCloud services.

ALL iPhone users have the ability to upgrade their iCloud storage space, they aren't excluding anyone.

This is borderline malicious practice.

No, nothing of the sort. How is optimizing the phone's performance malicious practice?

No there isn't.

This is a user to user forum, Apple is not here. If you feel a different phone would work better for you, then by all means switch to a different phone brand.

Apparently that was meant to hurt our feelings or something. I agree, no one here really cares what device you choose to use, and absolutely use the one that best meets your needs.

Nice, complete answer!

So, let’s backup a little. Are you really using an iPhone 8 Plus or do you have a newer device?

Can you better define the challenges you’re facing? We’d like to help and a clear and concise sentence or two will help a lot.

It’s also worth noting that you’re not addressing Apple or Apple Support here. In fact other than moderating the content to avoid spam, scammers, and personal attacks, they don’t participate.

I am aware that Apple is not in the community. I have talked to Apple Support and got some good help. I am using an iPhone 8 Plus. There is nothing wrong with my phone that a software update couldn’t fix. You probably know as well as I do that this phone doesn’t update past iOS 16 updates.

The system data was taking all the extra room on the device. When I removed data from my device, the system data used it. (Or optimized it, rendering it unusable, depending on your perspective)

according to Apple support, it was using more storage than it should have. I got the help I needed from Apple.

thanks.

I hope you can understand that.

My device “optimized” all the available space on my phone and made it unusable. According to Apple support it was using more than normal.

I am glad that you find iCloud useful. It doesn’t fit my needs.

Performance is what I was having a problem with because I couldn’t get any usable storage on the device.

Thanks for the “no there isn’t” answer. It isn’t what I wanted to hear but it is an Apple device and you aren’t Apple.

Thanks for your permission to shop elsewhere.

It is true, extraneous information is a distraction. It is the honey of community forums. It draws the most flies.

It gets no answers to questions asked.

I appreciate the links and answers that are in the thread. They are the same as what Apple support gave. They also suggested the community. If I had started with Support instead of the community I would not have stopped here.

thanks again for the helpful links. I’ll own that I deserve all the snide comments but they don’t help me either.
