Why am I being charged for free apps on the App Store?

I don’t know why this is happening all of a sudden, but when I tried to download apps like Alkeme: Black Mental Health, InstantGaming, Headspace etc. it’s asking me to sign in for billing information..even on apps that i’ve previously downloaded. and when i added a credit card, i get a notification from cashapp saying apple attempted to charge me $41…. why is apple trying to charge me $40 for free apps?

You usually have to have a functioning payment method. It is tested to see if it functions most every time that you log into the App Store. You have to have it for fee apps, to redownload apps and to update apps.

Apple tests the functionality of your payment method with an authorization hold. However, it is usually a small amount.

It sounds like you perhaps have an outstanding balance that you owe and when you enter a payment method Apple tries to charge you for the debt.

You should speak to Apple Support to clear up any issues with your account.
