It does not work to simply "hold down on the symbol until it wiggles".
Where/how do I eliminate the app? When it was being installed, Apple notified me that it wanted to delete and modify other apps!!! So I don't want to even open it.

Apps installed from outside of the App Store have their own uninstall procedures.
The short version is open finder, go to the applications folder, and drag the app to the trash.

Isn't Messenger associated with FaceBook? Do you have a Facebook account?
Drag the App from the Applications folder to the Trash bin in the Dock and empty the Trash. Iif asked at any time, provide your Admin password.
