External hard drives don't mount directly from Macbook M2 USB-C port / sonoma

The former topic "External hard drives don't mount under sonoma" has been closed. God knows why, it is a recent topic.

However.

I have a Macbook Air M2 running Sonoma.

I have always used my LaCie 5TB encrypted HDD with the same cable. I did not change anything. Then about a week ago it stopped mounting when connected directly to the Macbook. I tried different cables. Nothing worked, until I connected it to my USB hub instead. Same cables.

That is now the only way that this HDD mounts.

I can put any hub in between. I have four different ones. One of them is a Thunderbolt Raid with two HDD. Everything works except directly connecting it.

I did a restart of the Macbook. No change.

I see it right away: When I connect it directly, the status LED of the drive instantly lights up for 1 second, then no more. With the hubs, it lights up, pauses shortly then begins blinking with the drives activity. It needs long, has always needed long, but it mounts always.

Do you have any other peripherals also connected to your MacBook Air, especially any bus-powered ones? Is the Lacie drive bus powered? Is the hub you are using powered?

If you have multiple bus-powered devices connected, it's possible that the current draw is higher than what the Mac can deliver, which typically results in connection problems. What is the exact model of your Lacie 5TB HDD?

If you haven't already done this, try connecting only the Lacie drive to your MBAir and see if it works that way.

I'd also back up that drive just in case something may be going awry with it.
