iPad Pro auto dims and brightens when using Procreate

I always have auto-brightness OFF, auto-lock OFF, true-tone OFF battery low-power mode OFF (just mentioning these as l've seen people suggest these when other people have had this problem), Procreate assure me it's nothing to do with them. It's often when I'm working on something that I have to zoom in and out whilst working on- I can't do a screen recording or screenshot of it as it as the recording just even it out.

It drives me mad as it'll suddenly dim so it's too dim to see well and then brighten again just as suddenly- I just want it to stay on full brightness as per my settings.

I've looked for a solution on and off for a few years now to no avail.

In running your iPad at maximum screen brightness for an extended period - in particular when running CPU/GPU intensive Apps such as Procreate - it is very likely that your iPad’s thermal management is doing its job in trying to protect your iPad and its battery from thermal damage.

In using your iPad in the way that you describe, the internal temperature of your iPad may become too hot to safely sustain the screen brightness and processor load. In such circumstances you can expect to see the iPad screen dim and/or CPU performance be reduced until the internal temperature drops.

The alternative explanations are either an issue with software Apps, or the iPad itself. If your iPad is not operating as expected, begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where you will be able to demonstrate the problem to the technicians and have your iPad tested and assessed:

Thanks for your reply but I don’t think that’s it, I have felt my iPad get warm on occasion but it’s not even warm at the moment and it doesn’t seem to depend on how long I’ve been working, it seems to do it when there’s more or less dark colours on the screen- when there’s a higher proportion of dark it brightens again and more light areas, vice versa.
