touchid "com.apple.biometrics error 1" followed by "Unable to complete Touch ID enrollment."

My Touch ID has been failing. So followed the advise on another thread to erase current fingerprints and recreate. However, when I attempt to create a fingerprint I now get the message "Unable to complete Touch ID enrollment. Please go back and try again." When I return to the start and try again, I continue to get this same message. There seems to be no way to recreate my Touch ID. Help?

I would suspect a hardware issue


In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Make an appointment for a "hardware issue"
