Blocking Starlink access in iOS 18.3

iPhone v18.3 will give Elon Musk's Starlink access to our phones.

Is there any way to block, deactivate or opt out rather than just open access?

I suggest NOT updating until we learn more.

In which case it does not affect you AT ALL.

Please stop feeding the paranoia.

I posted this in another thread on the subject. PLEASE take a moment to read it and at least try to understand the reality of the situation.

Apple didn’t implement anything “in secret”.

Let’s get this straight once and for all. Apple is including the ability to make calls via satellite into iOS. This is a standards based protocol.

Apple is NOT partnering with Starlink. The carriers are free to partner with whatever satellite service providers they like.

So far, T-Mobile is the only carrier that’s implemented this in ANY way. it is currently in beta. T-Mobile has chosen Starlink as their satellite partner. If you don’t like it, don’t use T-Mobile or don’t join their beta program.

Even if you do opt into the service it does NOT give Starlink or Elon Musk access to your phone. Just as using AT&T or Verizon for cellular service does not give them access to your phone. The service provider, whether it’s cellular, satellite, or WiFi carries the traffic and routes it from one place to another. That’s all.

Please stop it with the ridiculous paranoia.

This functionality is going to be included in pretty much every smart phone in the near future, whether it’s an iPhone, Android device, or something else.

So....today I did the software upgrade to Sequoia without having heard about the *possible/potential* connection to StarLink.

I write all this to say I'm really, really wanting to UNINSTALL Sequoia and go back to Sonoma. Is that possible without too much danger of losing stuff? I've searched online for advice but wld love to hear from folks here. Thx.

This is a new level of ridiculous. Your Mac does not have a satellite radio in it.

Please stop with the conspiracy theories already.

I am as aware of the dangers of conspiracy theories as anyone -- and strive to act on info that has been vetted / articles that source that info from real science and hard facts (novel for today, I know). I heard this news from someone who works in the field, is not prone to alarmism, and suggested I do my own research, which is what I did, first by looking online and then, not wanting to trust only random Google hits, thought I'd ask this community for some feedback. Looks like I got it, though not in a very helpful way. Have a nice day.

I just updated to the latest iOS without knowing about the connection to Starlink. If this is true I’m smashing my iPhone and getting an Android instead for better privacy.

We don't care if you buy an Android. But how surprised you're going to be when you find out Android has had the Starlink connection for some time. So you'll accomplish nothing by going to Android.

Maybe read the thread and you'll learn all about this. Knowledge is good!

Yes, they have multiple partnerships.

Verizon’s relationship with Inmarsat may be commercial/business only. Verizon owns fully the business. Space X filed suit trying to block the sale, but failed miserably.

Verizon has a small investment in AST Space Mobile and are actually partnering with AT&T. Their announced goal is to provide 100% coverage in US.

I’m holding on updating. If I have to go android for the first time ever, I will. Apple MUST make this optional.

Maybe you should read the thread, to learn how disappointed you will be when you go Android and find out Android has had T-Mobile Starlink before Starlink came to T-Mobile on iPhone. What would you actually accomplish? Again, knowledge is a good thing. Lack of knowledge, not such a good thing. Read the thread. You may find it enlightening, to say the least.

Leon didn’t invent satellite technology or SAT phones. There are better choices out there that Apple can pick, and using fear and putting families up against our freedom to choose just to bully us into submission is gross.

Owner aside, StarLink from a technical perspective is the most secure satellite service ever developed. It is used by governments around the world, and is the only secure and reliable communications method used by Ukraine defending itself against Russia. It was just reported the other day that the Ukraine military controls its “suicide” explosive drones through StarLink.

You can choose not to use it because of who owns it (and I fully support you in that), just like you can skip buying a Tesla even though it is the most advanced car in the world, and you can skip visiting the International Space Station because Musk’s SpaceX is the only way to get there and back, but these are personal decisions having nothing to do with the technical achievements of these technologies.

How many times do you need to be told... Apple did not "pick" Starlink. T-Mobile did.

Smart move. You clearly didn't read the thread, because if you had, you'd already know Android has had Starlink through T-Mobile for some time.

I’m now convinced that no one who ever posts in ASC (other than an original poster) has ever read any of the thread that they add their post to. So I just assume they didn’t, and repeat what has already been posted sometimes over a hundred or so times.

Yep. They read the first post, and no matter how many posts follow, they don't read, they just indignantly add a me too comment. I guess I'm just wired differently. If I have a question, I read responses to see if my question is answered. Weird, right?
