Blocking Starlink access on Apple devices

I do not want Starlink to have any access to any of my Apple devices. Short of not updating, or leaving iOS products, will there be ways of blocking their access?

This is a complicated issue. While Apple is touting new satellite services, there are many other satellites besides Starlink. Apple has not announced any integrations with Starlink. But that doesn't mean that Apple devices won't work with Starlink now or in the future.

Apple's published documentation for Connecting to a satellite with your iPhone does not mention Starlink, but it does specifically say that Apple's satellite services are provided by "third-party network providers". So that could obviously include Starlink.

Furthermore, that same documentation specifically says that, "During certain disaster situations, your carrier may provide cellular connectivity to iPhone models using their satellite capability even if you have turned them off for everyday use and “SAT” doesn’t appear in the status bar." So you may be connected via Starlink and never know about it.

I understand that some people may not want to have any association with Starlink because of recent political events or because of Starlink's status as a military asset. If you have concerns, please send feedback to Apple. I also encourage you to send feedback to your cellular data provider as well. This kind of feedback could give Apple and other companies incentive to choose other providers for satellite services.

Stop it now. Secrets?

“Apple Inc. has been secretly working with SpaceX and T-Mobile US Inc. to add support for the Starlink network in its latest iPhone software, providing an alternative to the company’s in-house satellite-communication service,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

And what does that have to do with the fact that T-Mobile partnered with Starlink and ALL Apple did was open the bands for T-Mobile customers to access Starlink? Apple would of course HAVE to work with Starlink to accomodate T-Mobile. T-Mobile can't add access to bands without Apple's help.

If you say so. But just what do you think anyone here can do about this? We don't own or work for Apple. We don't work for T-Mobile. This is a user to user only forum. Worrying over something you honestly don't know how something will work or can't control seems like a silly way to conduct one's life.

Now, you can proactively do something right now.

You can sell your iPhone and there, potential future concern resolved. But don't go buy yourself a Samsung or Google phone. Starlink came to the Android platform with T-Mobile already. You can simply not be a T-Mobile customers as they are the only major US carrier who has partnered with Starlink. Or maybe, just maybe, stop fretting over the unknown until we understand what our options are. Until then, everything else is angst and mirrors.

In fact AT&T and Verizon filed a complaint with the FCC about Starlinks request for signal band variances. It’s only in beta on Android devices on T-Mobile network. AT&T and Verizon both have Satellite networks. So basically, it’s just competition, which generally benefits consumers and does provide choices.

I hope you have a great day!

Mark Gurman is well known author of Apple rumors. Apple is very secretive about virtually all their partners until they announce via a press release. Nothing new there. But in fact it was announced by T-Mobile back in 2022 that they had partnered with Starlink for satellite services.

You do know that both AT&T and Verizon have different satellite partners, correct?
