unable to import photos from iphone to mac

Unable to import photos from IPhone to mac. Both iphone and mac have been updated to most recent version today. Once connected, photos appear, but when import is selected, nothing happens. I have about 2900 photos to import, BUT I even tried doing a small selection (3 photos) and response is the same.

You wrote "Both iphone and mac have been updated to most recent version today".

But could you tell us the current system version? The "most recent" depends on the model of the device. Is your iMac still on  macOS 13.7? And the iPhone now running iOS18.3?

As test, you may want to launch Image Capture and try to import some photos from the iPhone to a folder in your Pictures folder. This way you can see, if there are damaged files on your iPhone or perhaps some sidecar files (files with extension .AAE or .XMP) are present, and Photos cannot handle them.
