Can I disable Stocks app on my MacBook Air?

I've read that I cannot delete the app, but can I disable it? It will still take up space --but finder is causing me grief (have to force quit repeatedly) and thought perhaps Stock is interfering....

Please read the information provided. You have the Stock Widget running and you simply need to remove it by editing your widgets after clicking the time in the upper right of your menubar.

Why do you think the Stock app is causing the problem. If you do t open it, it does nothing at all.

The Finder freezing would not be caused by any normal app running. It would be some system modification as others described. You might be exceeding your computer’s capabilities as noted by Lawrence Finch. You might be better served by posting an EtreCheck report so we can see what might be causing the issues if it is not RAM. https://etrecheck.com/en/index.html

The 8 GB is most likely your problem. You're going to need to be very, very careful of your memory usage. Keep as few apps open as possible. Restart at least once a day. Don't use Chrome as your browser. The one app you should keep running is Activity Monitor. Watch the Memory Pressure graph at the bottom. It's more relevant than the number. You're probably going to have a lot of trouble keeping it in the green; it will be in yellow most of the time. Once it goes red, shut down apps or restart if necessary.

If it were me (and it was in the Spring), I'd consider updating to a computer with more RAM. These days, 16 is really the minimum.

I realize that the Stocks app is not the problem. But I was trying to clean up my Mac and found I could not delete it. I agree that my Finder problem is due to something else. Relaunching Finder always fixes it. I've read that sometimes when it is "reindexing", that can cause finder to stop working. Perhaps with all the tags I'm adding, its it reindexing (for Spotlight?) frequently. Not sure....

Backup your Mac using Time Machine. Make sure you are logged in as administrator

Restart the Mac in recovery mode by holding down the power button until you see the White apple logo, release the power button

In Terminal:

Disable system integrity protection

csrutil disable

Navigate to the applications folder

cd /Applications/

Delete Stocks app

sudo rm -rf Stocks.app

Re-enable SIP

csrutil enable

Exit Terminal

exit

Restart the Mac as normal

I have no VPNs and no cleaning apps that I'm aware of. I have And I have not added anything in the last year that I can think of. The problem started when I started assigning tags to over 300 files. I have about 40 different tags. The finder just freezes; i.e. clicking to open a file doesn't work. Relaunching finder always works. I have Norten Anti-virus but is has been on the MacBook Air for over 3 years (since I bought the laptop). Is it just "reindexing"... I understand that it is not likely the Stock app but I still want to disable it. Can it be disabled?

MacOS uses virtual memory, so it is actually more efficient to have RAM almost full; apps that claim to “clean up” RAM actually slow down your Mac because it forces apps in RAM to be move to the virtual cache, where it must later be moved back. As IdrisSeabright pointed out, it’s memory pressure that is the more important parameter.

Apologize for the terse reply. Thank you all. I have learned about Activity Monitor and will use it to track CPU usage. As I type this is, it is 95-96% idle. I only use Safari and have resisted the repeated requests to make Chrome my default browser. The exception is that my on-line banking has to be done by Chrome and I will remember to quit Chrome when I am finished my banking. I will investigate getting a new computer when I'm back in Canada.

Again, my sincere thanks to all. Arnie

do they require you use some chrome only extension? Because the only other reason to require you to use chrome for their online banking is because they are idiots.

I work with an organization that uses SalesForce as its portal. The Training module (LITMOS) only works in Chrome. At one time it also worked in Firefox, but they fixed that.
