Apple Watch passcode versus PIN; what's the difference?
I created a PIN when I started with the Apple Watch. Now I've set a passcode so I can use Apple Pay with it. What's the difference? When do I need the PIN?
Apple Watch Series 10, watchOS 11

These are essentially the same thing, and is just a matter of a difference of terminology.
The term “passcode” is just what Apple calls a PIN as used by everybody else.
It's been quite a while since I set up my Apple Watch, but as I recall the only code I was prompted to set was the standard passcode used to access the Watch and to verify things like Apple Pay.

The only thing that would make any sense at all to me would be if you bypassed setting that initial passcode, something which is allowed initially, but you seem to indicate that you did set one. Perhaps you didn't actually set one though you thought you did? If that was the case, then it would indeed require you to set one when you set up Apple Pay, in which case that's the only passcode you probably have.

Thanks, but that doesn't reflect my experience. I set up a PIN when I started with the watch, but it still asked for a passcode before I could use the wallet with the watch. The passcode I set is different than the PIN.
I'm unclear on what you're referring to, but there is an access code for unlocking your Watch. That is what you set up when you first set up your Watch. That code is different from a verification code, aka a PIN, sent to verify login/connection to a service or account. Perhaps the latter is what you're referring to?
When I originally started with the Apple Watch, I was prompted to set a PIN. I have never been prompted enter it since then, and the watch opened without it. Then I wanted to set up Apple Pay. I received a message that I needed a passcode for the watch before I could use Apple Pay, so I set one up, different to the PIN, and was able to set up Apple pay. Now, whenever I put the watch on my wrist, I'm prompted for the passcode (not the PIN) which allows me to use the watch. So, what was the PIN for? Do I need it for anything?
