Adding layers and effects to a photo using built-in MacBook Air applications

I prefer to use built-in applications on my MacBook Air. I am trying to edit a photo (essentially as you would in Photoshop) to add explosion effects by layering a second photo onto my primary photo. Would this be possible using the stock applications on my MacBook? I am not looking to pay for a Photoshop subscription or any other similar service. There most certainly should be a way to do this with what I currently have installed on my computer.

There are a couple of apps which will do layer like Photoshop: the free, open source app Gimp, GraphicConverter or Affinity Photos which are one time purchases.

I purchased Photoshop Elements 2025 for Mac for $70 for 3 years or $23/yr.

I've tried the other alternative apps but having used Photoshop or Photoshop Elements for over 25 years I found the learning curve to be more than I was willing to go thru so got the 3 year subscription.

I use GraphicConverter in the trial mode sometimes for unusual image formats that PSE can't handle. The trial mode makes you wait for 15 seconds before it will fully open.
