RAM upgrade in iMac 2020

Hi, I'd like some advice into upgrading the RAM in my iMac.RAM with its mere 8GB.

I've ordered a DIMM Memory Upgrade Kit and want some advice as to how to best position them into the two remaining slots.

Reason for asking is after reading about potential performance and even system crashing issues on the forum pages. [see attachement and imac 2020 27inch compatible ram - Apple Community] and also some footage at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jojJb9I_krI&t=229s&ab_channel=9to5Mac

Clearly I need to get this right so... advice please?

Many thanks.

Install memory in an iMac - Apple Support

Follow the instructions for your specific model Mac. I recommend avoiding amateur advice. I also recommend OWC: https://www.owc.com/solutions/memory. There are few competent vendors, and Crucial is certainly one of them, but OWC is the only one I have used and can personally recommend.

Whatever you do, avoid PC-centric vendors. Macs are intolerant of RAM that does not absolutely positively meet Apple's stringent requirements. PCs can adjust to "faster" or "slower" RAM leaving the user none the wiser. Macs do not have that ability.

Hi,

I take in what you say and thanks

However I have just read that it does appear to matter what combination of slots are used.

See attached image.

The top screen shot shows existing memory with 4GB in slots 1 and 4 with full "normal" speed.

Center screen shot shows what happens if I were to merely put the new DIMMs into the two vacant slots. It shows a drop in speed.

The bottom screen shot shows the slots swapped around. This brings the speed back up.
