How can I update my AirPods 4 if they won’t connect?

Hi!

i just bought my AirPods and i noticed that they are on pretty old software (7A304 instead of 7B20, and case is 70.89.0 instead of 71.8.0) and thus plugged them in overnight next to my phone to hopefully update their firmware, according to many websites.

However they still refused to update through the night. I also use my AirPods with my ipad and was wondering how else should i update my AirPods? And also whether I can plug my iPad with my AirPods with a USB-C to USB-C cable and charge the AirPods and hopefully send the downloaded data through the cable instead of through Bluetooth and 'purge' the update process?

also a lot of people saying that the AirPods will update when connected to Bluetooth and charging with the case closed, but for me and i think everyone else the AirPods automatically disconnect when both AirPods are inside the case and are closed and charging. So…??

Here are Apple's instructions on how to update your AirPods:

Copied from: About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support

Update your AirPods or AirPods Pro firmware

  1. Make sure that your AirPods are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Put your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid.
  3. Plug the charging cable into your charging case, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
  4. Keep the lid of the charging case closed, and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
  5. Open the lid of the charging case to reconnect your AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  6. Check the firmware version again.

If you still can’t update your firmware, reset your AirPods, then try to update your firmware again.
