Can WhatsApp access the camera without initial permission on iPhone?

I’m just wondering if I install a chat application like WhatsApp and while doing so do not grant permission to the app to use my camera, scan the app get access to the camera anyhow?

I understand that based on some people’s concerns, it sounds as though once permission is given to the app to access the cameras, the cameras are accessed at times other than when the application actually being used. I want to know if a way around this is to not provide permission to access the camera or contacts or send notifications and as a result of no permissions, and in an effort to still provide images through the app does starting from photographs and selecting photographs to then forward to someone on WhatsApp does this ensure the camera is not accessed and can’t be accessed while sharing images that are not taken with the app?

For third-party apps like WhatsApp, camera access is controlled by iOS privacy settings. If you grant WhatsApp permission under Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera > WhatsApp, then the app can directly access the camera to take pictures and videos.

However, even without camera permission, WhatsApp can still send images and videos from:

The Photos app (Camera Roll) – WhatsApp can access photos if it has permission under Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > WhatsApp (which can be set to "None," "Selected Photos," or "All Photos").
Downloaded images – WhatsApp can send media downloaded from the internet, received from chats, or saved from other apps.

So, while denying camera access prevents WhatsApp from taking new photos or videos directly, it does not stop the app from sending existing media stored on the device.

When the camera access is granted, it allows the app to access the camera at the time it runs. It is also highlighted by the little green dot on the display indicating the camera is in use at the time.

That said, if the app is allowed to run in the background, it loses the ability to access the camera, even though you have granted access to it.
