New 2024 Mac mini Pro Disk Utilities Issues

I have two external drives that I use as backup and daily. One of them is a 3T HDD drive that I use for storing large files. However, on the new Mac mini, it seems to be experiencing issues that weren’t present on the old 2014 Mac mini. I tried using Disk Utility to check the drive, but it fails to verify or repair the disk. Every time I boot the Mac, I get an error message that says, “This disk cannot be repaired by this Mac. Please back up your data…”

So, I connected the enclosure back to my 2014 Mac mini and ran DiskUtilities...it repaired the disk.

When I try to use DiskUtilities back on the new Mac mini pro, it fails again.

What is the problem? Is it because the disk was originally formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

Should I not run DiskUtilities on old Mac OS Extended drives on my new Mac?

Mac mini, macOS 12.7

As I said, DiskUtility stops and cannot continue, then I get a message every time that says to back up the drive.

Running First Aid on the Container was the critical part as the file system within that Container object may have an issue that must be fixed before the file system on the actual volume can be repaired.

However, when I connected the drive to my 2014 Mac mini, DiskUtilities on OSX 12.6 repaired the disk with no problems. Then it runs fine on the new Mac unless I try to use DiskUtilities and then it all starts over with an error.

Odd.

It seems to be the New Mac, and OS 15.3 that is the problem. I think there is a glitch in the software or the new Mac does not like OS Extended Journaled format.

I thought this drive was using the APFS file system from the way your original post was worded.....it gave me that impression anyway.

If the volume is using HFS+ (aka MacOS Extended) file system, then you can use the third party paid app Disk Warrior to attempt to repair the HFS+ volume. Disk Warrior does an amazing job at repair issues with the HFS+ file system, but if Disk Warrior detects a hardware failure with the drive, then Disk Warrior will refuse to repair the volume. Unfortunately Disk Warrior has not yet acquired the ability to repair APFS volumes (it is being worked on...just takes time). However, if the volume is getting corrupted regularly, then I would be concerned about what is causing that corruption as it may indicate a hardware issue of some sort. I never run First Aid unless I'm having a problem and suspect a file system issue.

Make sure to run First Aid on the hidden Container.....it will automatically scan all APFS volumes residing within the Container as well. If this external drive still has unfixed errors after running First Aid several times, then you the only option would be to erase the drive and restore from a backup.

There is a chance this external drive may have a hardware issue as well.
