Series 10 GPS only, fall detection work away from iPhone

I'm trying to decide between cellular or just GPS on an Apple Watch Series 10. I live in New Mexico and go hiking in rather remote areas. If I have just GPS and should fall, without my phone there, will emergency calling still work? Or do I need to have cellular?

The non-cellular Apple Watch has NO ability to initiate or receive calls/messages/etc. without a nearby phone.

Think of it as tethering... if the Watch has no cellular capability, it sends all its data to the Phone, and piggy-backs on the Phone's network connection. If there's no phone, there's no service.

The cellular Watch can run autonomously (assuming there's sufficient signal, of course) with it's own cellular connection, with or without a phone, so if you're expecting to need to rely on your watch without your phone nearby, this is the way to go.

Thank you! That's so helpful. If I may impose upon you for one other question: I was told that if I had a cellular Apple Watch but was somewhere without its local carrier access (think: Thailand on vacation), it wouldn't function. Is that correct?
Thanks again - this community thing really works!

A cellular Watch with no cellular coverage is going to be equivalent to GPS-only. No cellular comms.

An iPhone with no cellular coverage is going to be equivalent to an iPod touch. No cellular comms.

In some countries and regions, processing 911 or 999 emergency calls from non-contract devices can be legally required, but that varies.
