Changing the primary device used in Find My

I have various devices registered in Find My app under me. I can see them all in Devices tab, but I want to change the device that is associated with my person on the People tab, as it’s tracking the wrong one.

Looking at forums rooms it seems like this used to be possible a few years ago, however I’m now on iOS 18 and I can’t see how to do it. Is it still possible or is this functionality that’s removed?

Thanks

It's a little difficult to answer your question because you have not given much detail on what devices you have and from which of these you want to use as your location.

However it may answer your question to say that in iOS you set the sharing from the device you wish to state your location. This is not achieved from the device currently giving your location. It does not 'hand over' your location to a new device.

In your preferred device open Find My, go to the Me tab, pull up the panel to reveal the My Location section. You will observe that this gives the current device name in the From field. Under this you should have a blue link which says Use this iPhone as My Location.

Touch on this to start the process of moving over your location being identified from this device.

Hi charlie.c

I wanted to check that your member with the four devices you mentioned has their own Apple Account and has all of these devices signed into their account. Then they must have Find My enabled.

Could it be that their "location" is registering at home because they have not set up Find My on the iPhone, or set it as the device from which the location is sourced? Or perhaps they have a device on some other family member's account?

If the Apple Watch is GPS + Cellular it has the potential to be selected as the holder of the location, but the Mac would always be in the Devices tab (it does not have a Me tab in Find My), as would the AirPods.

Thanks David.

OK, this is a really a question about a member of our iCloud Family. They have an iPhone, Apple watch, earphones and a MacBook. In the Devices tab, these devices are all shown at their own locations wherever they are. But on the People tab, it seems to show the person's location at our home, even if they are out with e.g. their phone.

What I wanted to know is if it's possible for them to change it so that in the People tab, their location is shown by a specific device (i.e. their mobile), as it seems not to be currently ?

I looked in my Find My settings (just to see if I could change it for me), and can see the From field but no blue link underneath. But I'll check their device and see if i find it.

Thanks

Hi David

Yes they have their own Apple Account - it was originally a child one but now they are an adult, it is theirs ... but they stay in the Family. All their devices are enabled and can be see in the Devices tab of Find My. I checked and Find My is set up on the iPhone, and it shows under the location - but under the location list shows "This Phone" and also the Apple Watch. When we checked the iPhone, there was no blue option use it as the location (perhaps because it already is)?

The Apple Watch is just GPS, not cellular.

It seems to be that there is a conflict - two devices are showing as the location ...?
