I don't know if you're talking about a phone or a Mac or what. However, there is no requirement to upgrade. There are constantly new security upgrades and bug fixes, and you need to keep track of those as your OS gets older.

Photos is part of the OS, so changing to a new OS, like from iOS17 to iOS18, must replace Photos, as well.

I'm using the new Photos app, and I find it different, but no more confusing than any other new thing. It's nothing like the new car I just bought where I had to park under a tree with the manual(s) several days to figure out what all the buttons did. (I'm still not sure.) But my new car does way more than the old one, and it's way safer (and more fun.) so it's been worth the trouble.

In the case of the new version of Photos, the most important thing is to use it and not pay attention to the people who gripe about new stuff that they haven't taken the time to understand.

Well, you don't have to, as we had said. Then again, as I moved from film SLRs to digital to mirrorless cameras, it's taken some trial and error, but I find a lot less error, these days. It used to be that when I went from shadow to sun, on the fly I'd switch the film from 400 ASA (now ISO) to 64. I messed up a lot of film doing that! Now I have to know which dial to turn, but there are a lot fewer ruined pictures!

So-- it's a lot of trouble to make changes, and you don't have to change--but it could be worth the trouble.
