You’re not understanding how Apple Pay and your Wallet work. Apple is not a bank. They do not handle any funds for the payment or the refund. Only banks can do that. When you added your Citibank card to Apple Wallet, Citi gave your card a new number referred to as the Apple Pay number or DPAN (Device Primary Account Number). The DPAN is used so the bank can tell when you use Apple Pay and when you swipe or use the chip.

Apple Pay encrypts your personal information and payment information so the merchant does not have your real card number. This reduces your exposure to hackers getting your payment information and personal information from the merchant. Apple Pay is the safest way to make payments.

When your initiated the refund the merchant processes the information and sends it to their credit card processor, who then debits the merchants bank account and sends the funds to Citibank. Apple and Apple Pay are not involved with the refund. Any delays are on the merchants end. It’s not uncommon for merchants to hold refunds and process them once a week.

What you need to do is contact the merchant and get the ARN (Acquirer Reference Number). All credit card refunds are given that number. Give the ARN to Citibank and the bank will be able to track the refund.

You’re not talking to Apple here. We’re all fellow users just like you. I happen to have many years experience in the finance field and I’m happy to explain what’s going on. If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate don’t hesitate to ask and I hope you have a great weekend!
