Attempting to duplicate file (error code -8062).

I am attempting to duplicate a directory and keep getting 8062 error. Have made sure the contents are not in use, tried duplicating onto an external drive, restarted computer etc. and I keep getting 8062.

Have been unable to find any information about this error. How do I figure out what this means?

The current stable release of Sequoia including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 15.3 — I would start there

The error code -8062 on a Mac typically occurs when there is an issue with file permissions or disk access, usually related to the Time Machine backup process or when copying, moving, or accessing files.

the follow up questions —

what...?

where...?

how...?

old issue, new issue, what changed...?

I have the exact same issue. Here's the rough context for my situation:

  • My Mac is a 2021 16" MacBook Pro.
  • Plugged in a Western Digital My Passport (WDMP) to my Mac.
  • Opened up disk utility and partitioned the WDMP into two, 2TB for Extended Journal and the remainder for exFAT.
  • Fired up Time Machine and selected the WDMP Extended Journal partition as the destination.
  • (I downloaded all of WMDP software, WMDP Discovery, WMD Security)
  • Let Time Machine do the backup.
  • After some time, after the Time Machine back up completed, I tried to duplicate a larger folder, 700MB, and got the error: -8062 NOT from the WDMP drive, just a folder in my Documents folder.
  • I've tried many things including:
    • Booting from safe mode and running first aids on the volumes.
    • Unsyncing iCloud for the computer and re-syncing it.
    • Restarting the computer multiple times.
    • Enabling permissions via the "Get Info" modals and "Apply to enclose items."
    • Reinstalling MacOS entirely.
    • Provided Finder the full disk access manually in Settings.
  • Strangely, smaller individual files and folders will copy and paste successfully. It seems to only be folders and files that are larger than a certain size. I have plenty of space available, 162 GB.
  • UPDATE: Turns out copy and pasting via the terminal works, but not via the GUI. But I still cannot copy and paste even this new duplicated folder via the GUI.
