Unable to sync my iPad files to OneDrive

For some reason there seems to be no way to copy or move files to my OneDrive storage. I’m trying to sync my files to my OneDrive account, as icloud backup only works if you can restore to a new enough spare ipad, and my spare ipad is too old and can’t update to a new enough version of ios.

Options to sync aren’t offered, and moving the files seem to be impossible even through the files app.

There seem to be some good third party apps - I’m trying Readdle - but those apps seem to be restricted from syncing too. The only thing I seem able to sync to OneDrive is my camera roll…

(there is more than enough storage space on my onedrive account)/

If you can help me work out why I can’t transfer or auto-sync, I’d be very grateful. I have a 2022 ipad pro.

This support page outlines the natively supported backup methods for iPad and iPhone:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Native iOS/iPadOS backup and restore processes are dependent upon iCloud, or connection to either Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS).

Natively supported methods offer full system backup - consisting of data and device settings.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

An iCloud backup can be restored to any iOS/iPadOS device that has the same or newer version as created the backup. To be clear, you cannot restore to a device that has an older version of iOS/iPadOS than created the backup.

It is possible to use a third-party App to backup data (but not device settings) to a variety of external storage options - including third-party Cloud services, external media devices and network storage. One App that comes readily to mind is FileBrowser Professional by Stratospherix:
