iphone mail app suddenly fails to connect to imap mail servers

The default iphone mail app was working fine with my gmail and yahoo accounts. Yesterday afternoon I started getting errors syncing emails with "connection to server failed, network error posix 61" errors. Network was working fine. I tried (in order) hard phone reset, turning off and on mail server in mail settings for each account, deleting and readding the accounts, without any success. I upgraded to IOS 18.3 last night. After upgrading I still have the same error. The yahoo and gmail specific apps work fine. I had gotten used to the IOS mail app. Any idea on why mail doesn't like imap servers anymore? Are there any next steps besides abandoning the mail app and using something different?

There are many reports of this problem. Apple seems to have been aware since the iOS 18 beta release, but so far no fix. If you Google search you’ll find a number of suggested solutions, including deleting and reinstating the Mail app or just removing the account and setting it again. I suspect we’ll just have to wait until Apple realises this is a major pain for so many users and takes remedial action.
