I frequently use the command+option+eject keyboard shortcut to put my Mac to sleep, but on the last couple versions of Mac OS that keyboard shortcut hasn't been available from the login screen. That's typically the place where I would want to put my Mac to sleep after logging out.
I know about the menu in the upper right corner, but a shortcut would be preferable. Does anyone know if there's a way to enable that?
Control Command Q will both lock the user account and put it to sleep.

That's a good point, and I was unaware of that control+command+Q option. Maybe I'll teach myself to start doing that. Still, doesn't make a whole lot of sense that the sleep option is there in the login screen but the keyboard shortcut isn't.
Anyway, thanks for your help.
EDIT: cmd+control+Q doesn't actually do that on my Mac. It just locks the screen but doesn't put the machine to sleep. I did figure out that I can hit the esc button and it appears to put the machine to sleep after the screen is locked out. Weird.

I use Siri. Just code the following shortcut:
Then just simply say, "Siri sleep now".
