Request for Bug Fix or Update for Stardew Valley on macOS

I’m on MacOS Sequoia 15.3

Stardew Valley, StardewModdingAPI, Stardrop, Steam, and Terminal are on full disk access and developer tools.

“Malware blocked and moved to trash. StardewModdingAPI was not opened because it contains malware. This action did not harm your Mac.”

I’m writing regarding an issue with Stardew Valley on my Mac. When I try to open the game, macOS immediately flags it as malware and sends it straight to the trash without giving me any option to bypass or approve the app manually.

This is a problem not just for the game Stardew but other applications as well.

Since this is a legitimate game from a trusted source, this behavior seems overly restrictive and disruptive. I understand macOS has robust security features, but it would be helpful if there were a fix, update, or clearer steps to allow trusted apps like Stardew Valley to be opened without being forced into the trash. A lot of people are having this issue.

Is there any possibility of implementing a bug fix or update to address this issue and provide a smoother experience for users?

I have tried to add certain apps and such to my full disk access and developer tools in my settings and other stuff that the internet and ChatGPT has recommended but nothing is working. I can’t play Stardew at all and I don’t have enough money to get another computer at the moment.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 15.3

You need to strip the quarantine off the StarDew App and ModdingAPI, re-install the software then,

Open Terminal:

xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine <path to app>

Drag and drop the Apps from /Applications to the Terminal to fill in the path to the Apps run this command for each app. Do not type <path to app> it will be filled in when you drag and drop from Applications to Terminal.

it's up to the creator of Stardew Valley to make sure it's compatible with Sequoia, not Apple.

That's partly true: Apple has broken something with legit apps signed by legit developer certificates. As you may know, some apps are not updated (so no resigning by developers) and in this case Apple has blocked them from working just because of new rules for apps signing. Let users decide if they want to run their apps. Previously it was possible to overcome this measures: allow app to load, but in Sequoia it's not possible. Apps shouldn't be killed just because of some changes in macOS.

For example, recently the legit Docker app has stopped working, because macOS Sequoia was complaining it's malware. Can you imagine how many developers were affected by this bug in macOS Sequoia? And the only solution worked - waiting for a new version. Imagine Apple infrastructure team not able to access docker containers, because Docker.app is a malware now :D

There are plenty of small (and not so small) apps, which are not participating in SDKs programs. And in Sequoia it's not about changes in SDK, but in gatekeeper, which refuses some apps to work. I'm sure Docker is big enough for its dev team to be aware of changes, but even Docker app had issues and stopped working, so there is something wrong at Apple side if even big companies weren't prepared.

You cannot even run an X86_64 VM on an Apple Silicon Mac unless via glacial emulation through the UTM virtual machine. Parallels has this in early beta, but it is not ready for primetime, is slow, and gaming in a VM guest is self-abuse.

What Apple chooses to change in the operating system is shared with third-party application developers via the beta program. If an app developer does not choose to participate in the Sequoia SDK beta program or stay current with Apple's changes, that is not Apple's fault.
