MacPro 5,1 Mojave to MacMini M1 Sequoia: next steps

Finally got the courage to go through with transferring everything from my MacPro running Mojave to my MacMini M1 running Sequoia using Time Machine and Migration Assistant. Everything went smoothly but I would appreciate suggestions about how to proceed with cleaning up the MacMini: lots of apps that probably won't work (e.g. QuickBooks for Mac 2016) and lots of accumulated junk from the mid 2010 MacPro.

It's the first time I have made a jump over that large an OS gap, so I'm a little unsure about the most efficient way to proceed.

Thank you!

I was a little surprised that the transfer worked as well as it did, but then started to look at all the old garbage that had been transferred from my work computer since 2010(!) The prospect of cleaning it up looked like a big mountain to climb...that's when I submitted the question.

Yesterday, I took your advice, erasing all content and settings. That was pretty quick. Then I transferred only my user folder, made a list of the apps I really need today in 2025, and spent about 2 hours re-installing them.

Things are much cleaner now...thanks again!

How much time do you have to perform a cleanup ?

Mojave to Sequoia and Intel to Apple Silicon and migrated everything from Old to New

One Size does Not fit All

If the new computer is the Apple Silicon M1 / M2 / M3 /M4 Computer - would suggest Only Migrating the User Account and nothing more.

Some have had success and usually they are well seasoned veterans who are well versed in trouble shooting  and have the time to do a cleanup

Others have been left with a mess when Migrating everything.

Issues that may have existed on the older computer will be migrated to the New Computer.

This would badly pollute the new Original and Pristine installation of the new OS.

Applications, extensions and Software Drivers may or may not even work on the new computer.

IMHO - it would be best to only install new application etc Directly from the Developer or the Apple Apps Store.

Due Diligence on New Applications and make sure they are Sequoia compatible and factor in the ARMs CPU of the Apple Silicon Computer

There is a relatively quick way to Start Over without this process Touching the Operating System ( Sequoia )

For Apple Silicon computer >> Use Disk Utility to erase a Mac with Apple silicon.

Using " Use Erase All Content and Settings "
