HEIC Photos Preview super dark on MacOS

Whenever I take or am sent an HEIC photo, on messages for example, they look great and preview just fine on my iPhone but on Mac they are fine in the thumbnail preview but then when opened with preview or space bar is used for quick preview they turn super dark. It's not exclusive to messages. Once I move them to the desktop either by downloading or sending via airdrop they still turn out this way.

Unsure of whats going on here or how to correct it. Converting to JPEG doesn't fix btw.

When I open these images in the photos app they do show correct color. Just not on the finder/messneger level
