"navigation error; the request was for an HTTP URL, only HTTPS URLs are allowed"

The latest system update caused the iPhone (Safari) to stop opening QR codes generated by interactive whiteboards in schools. When I try to save the board's content via QR code, I get an error: "navigation error; the request was for an HTTP URL, only HTTPS URLs are allowed". I then have to use Firefox or another browser to open it.
