Whether and how far you can upgrade the operating system on your MacBook Pro depends on its hardware model year ( > About This Mac).

If your MacBook Pro has a model year of

  • Mid 2012 through Early 2013 – Catalina is the end of the line.
  • Late 2013 through Mid 2014 – Big Sur is the end of the line.
  • Early 2015 through 2016 – Monterey is the end of the line.
  • 2017 – Ventura is the end of the line.
  • 2018 or later – You can upgrade to Sequoia (the latest version of macOS).

The last version of macOS Catalina is 10.15.7 released in 2020.

To get that latest update, click System Preferences > Software Update to download and install any available updates.

Optionally you may download the Catalina 10.15.7 installer from the App Store here:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-catalina/id1466841314

This download will deposit an installer application in your Applications folder. Double-click that to run it.

Exactly which model year is your MacBook Pro. If 2012 or earlier, then macOS 10.15.7 is as far as it can be updated.
