Turn off Photos storing on MacBook Air

When I bought my MacBook Air, I intentionally did not sync iCloud to the Photos on the computer, to save space. When I recently upgraded my OS to Sequoia 15.2, it backed up automatically. If I turn off synching to the Mac, will it delete all my photos from iCloud?

If you turn off iCloud Photos on your Mac, then it will be disconnected from iCloud. So think of it this way-- it's much like just powering it down. When the computer's battery dies, all the pictures at iCloud don't suddenlthy disappear.

So, when you disconnect the Mac's Photos Library from iCloud, then your iCloud Photos Library will remain just like it was before the disconnect. And if your phone is connected to iCloud Photos, it will continue to be synchronized

Sometimes people have pictures that aren't actually in the Photos Library and aren't controlled by Photos-- perhaps because they were transferred manually. Those can be problematic.

The other thing is, if you have "Optimize Storage" turned on, then Photos relies on the originals in iCloud. Disconnecting from iCloud would leave the Mac with just smaller preview files and no access to the originals. In that case you would be given the option of downloading all the originals, or deleting the previews. If you see this notice, be sure to read it carefully, and be patient in asking questions to be sure. I do not use "Optimize Storage" on my Mac-- but I do use "Optimize" on my iPhone, since it has way less storage.
