Text message and call dropping issue on my iPhone, post iOS 18.3.1 update

Ever since the 18.3 software update, my cellular service goes in and out randomly. I am able to start a call but it drops randomly and then I can’t even send text messages out. This was on an iPhone 15 pro max. I go to Apple and Verizon (my cellular company) and both think there must be a hardware issue with it, and suggest either fixing the phone or getting a new one. I ended up buying a 16 pro max and sure enough, same exact issue. It’s gotta be the software update, but I’m not seeing anything?

I contacted Verizon and after them offering me new phones to fix the issue I finally got someone who helped SOLVE this problem.

turn off WiFi calling and leave cellular data on

OR

Turn on WiFi calling and leave cellular data off if you are connected to WiFi

either way it’s the WiFi calling that does not work on this new update. I hope this helps you guys, my calls stopped dropping so far this was just last night I turned off WiFi calling

"I upgraded to 18.3.1. I can't even call anyone. Call doesn't work at all, plus home screen freezes and can't adjust brightness or volume. I reset my phone and still nothing. Hate this update!"

Troubleshooting iPhone After an Update:

I. Get your iPhone Serviced:

IMPORTANT: Create a backup of your iPhone prior to bring it in for service. That way, you can have something to restore it from, should anything go wrong before, during, or after the service.

A. Take this to an Apple store:

You'd setup a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store, taking it in for service. There, it will be diagnosed, and you'll be provided with your options.

B. Take this to an AASP:

See an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) in your local area...

Contacting an AASP:

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix the battery

Also...

II. Report this to Apple:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of you occurrences, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

I’m having the same issues since upgrading to 18.3.1. Messages and texting are incredibly glitchy and slow with intermittent freezing. Phone calls have poor connections and dropping issues that seem to be audio based. Ex. Switching from iPhone to speaker or AirPods.

This is to Bob Timmons in response to his answer. It’s software my friend if we all have a different make of phone , mine a 14 pro max that’s doing it too. Fine before update now people are not receiving my text and calling is a hit or miss. Not as if I went somewhere like a cave and tried calling I’m at the usual places I go. It worked before, after no. I see comments iPhone 12, 13, there’s a comment from someone with the new 16 we all have the same problems. So it’s software or the software crippled ore phones. Maybe you got lucky and it didn’t affect yours sorry my opinion Software

I'm having the same issue on a T-Mobile iPhone 15. After spending considerable time with T-Mobile support, they said i need a new iPhone and told me to go to my local Apple Store. They did a full software reset and software update and it didn't work. I spoke with someone at AppleCare who confirmed this is a problem they're aware of and there is no fix for it yet. This is ridiculous. Apple, you need to fix this now.

it is IMPOSSIBLE to conduct work with these issues. I have 2 iphones. One is a 15 and one is a 13. One is for work and one is personal. My personal phone updated to 18.3 and immediately i had issues with calls. 5 min into ANY call they can no longer hear me... then the call drops. I can hear them fine. During a 30 min call it happens probably 5-6 times. My work phone was still working fine. Then a week later my work phone updated on its own and EXACT same issue happening now with my work phone. IT IS INFURIATING. Not to mention competely unprofessional to have to continually call people back bc they suddenly cant hear me and then the call drops. I have had 3 customers tell me theyll just talk to me some other time after this happened multiple times in one call. Called apple they told me i needed to reset my phone == thats their go-to. DO NOT DO IT BC IT DOESNT WORK and you lose all your settings,,. face id, wifi settings, etc. Waste of time. I did it only on my work phone and it did nothing. Also updated to 18.3.1 and it made it worse. worst update since the iphone came out. They need to get this fixed. PS.. it happens on speaker, and on regular listening. It doesn't matter which you are on.

Call Apple back and ask for another layer of support. Tell them you’ve tried everything. I now finally have Apple running support on my phone in the back-end to collect my code while the system keeps dropping and they are sending it to a higher level engineer team next week. Don’t hang up until you get someone to do the same and understand it’s a bigger issue than they think. It’s been a month and I was on the phone with a doctor today and it kept dropping the call and I could never get ahold of the doctor again. It’s AWFUL.

yes! This same thing is happening to me and my husband. My husband has a 15 pro max and I have a 14 pro. We have Verizon. Everything worked fine before updating to 18.3 and 18.3.1. Now our calls drop all the time.

My parents and his parents are also experiencing this issue after updating and they have a combination of cell providers and of the SE 2022, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and iPhone 14

I definitely think this a software issue

Calls Don’t connect for me. Definitely an issue since 18.3.1 update. Tried aetrageser’s data and Wi-Fi calling solutions, however for me they didn’t work. I’ve got an SE 2020. The only thing that works for me is turning on the Speaker while dialing, then it connects. Haven’t tried turning off the speaker while talking.
