Connection problems to Opel Meriva with USB cable since iOS 18

Until now, I had connected my iPhone 15 Pro Max with cable (USB-A to USB-C) to an Opel Meriva 2012 and used it like an iPod. The iPhone was rarely accepted as an audio source (iPod) when first connected. I often had to unplug and plug the iPhone several times.

But since iOS 18 it doesn't work anymore. The iPhone is not accepted by the Meriva as an iPod or the iPhone does not recognize the Meriva.

I can't listen to music and podcasts from the iPhone in the car. :-(

Any idea why this is and how I could solve it?

The old iPod audio protocol dates back to their 30-pin connectors. It has been obsolete since 2014. Apple has been slowly removing support for it with each release of iOS.

You will probably need to explore other options, such as using a wired headphone/line-out audio adapter on your iPhone, bluetooth audio, or a new audio system. Bluetooth audio has been supported in many vehicles since at least 2010, probably earlier, so your vehicle may already support it.

Without a clue how to continue I tried again what I had done many times before.

At first, I connected my iPhone with cable (USB-A to USB-C) to my Opel Meriva. The message "This accessory is not supported by this iPhone." popped up on my iPhone.

I tried it again several times. The result was the same.

At the end I was in the situation:

  • Radio was on
  • The Music app was running on the iPhone
  • I started some song in the Music app

Then I connected the iPhone by cable.

Finally it worked. I could listen to music and podcasts from the iPhone on the speakers in my car.

So, in a specific situation the iPhone with iOS 18 can be connected to my Opel Meriva.

I just hope this is reproducible.
