External ThinkVision monitor flickers off. No Mac driver updates available.

My ThinkVision monitor (was previously used with a PC), flickers off from time to time. I did some research to see if it was the cable or what else might be causing it and found that it may be due to the lack of a mac driver. Apparently it goes into power saving mode because it may not detect the signal? I saw a suggest to check monitor settings to ensure they aren't set for power saving mode. I don't see that option on my MacBook Pro. Any other suggestions? Would it be worth trying a new cable? If I were to get a new monitor, how can I tell which may have this problem since most say they are compatible with Macs.
