Why does Apple Maps say Gulf of America?
The Gulf of Mexico is the global name for the Gulf of Mexico. Why has Apple changed it to the Gulf of America? That is not the correct name. not the official name.

I will absolutely not be using Apple Maps until they reflect the true name: Gulf of Mexico.

Ok. Problem solved.
For everyone here, Apple does not read these threads. If you want to communicate to Apple directly, please send them feedback here:

Users in the United States will see the name as it is the official name provided through USGS. Users elsewhere will see the name the body has had since 1607.

Then you will also not be using Google maps. They also made the change.

So far, MapQuest is an option for you.
Who on earth gives a flying ____ what the name on the map says? GPS navigation still works on it, boats still float on it, and nearly everyone complaining about the name change has neither seen, swam, sailed, bicycled, or walked on it. There are those in this country that are incensed with the word America though.
All—MapQuest displays the Gulf of Mexico

That’s illegal and I’m insulted you would change the name without Congressional approval
Changing the USGS data does not require Congressional approval, but Congress can force a change through legislative action and have it changed back if they were inclined to do so. I assume you have been in contact with your Congressional Representatives. They are responsible for representing your views and you are responsible for choosing the ones to do that.
Also named incorrectly in Canada.
Mr. Finch (and others) have already explained the workings.
Your indignation w/ Apple (who BTW is not even present in this community of fellow users) is at best misplaced.

I will work on it. Is "Usonian" a typo? Or is it an evolution of your new word? It's sound a bit less alien but still pretty good. I'd vote for it.
No, Usonian is a proposed name for residents of the United States, and used by Frank Lloyd Wright to describe prefab metal house designs that he actually built and that still have people living in them→https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usonia
Google has it too. Is there a real map app or do we need a new one?
IdrisSeabright..
Usonian: one meaning from Frank Lloyd Wright, appears
w/ DuckDuckGo search engine result; among others and
in general proposed a New World view and name-sake
..rather than 'America' ~ & now has different meanings.
Usonia (/juːˈsoʊni.ə/) "is a term that was used by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright to refer to the United States in general (in preference over America), and more specifically to his vision for the landscape of the country, including the planning of cities and the architecture of buildings. Wright proposed the use of the adjective Usonian to describe the particular New World character of the American landscape as distinct and free of previous architectural conventions."

So that's another view of meaning that is not strict dictionarium.

And given my proximity to the McKinley vs Denali debate, I'm not
neutral. - Historically without racist impingement, Denali was first.
I've only been in the new fake named former president park once
with my parents & sister, in our family's new 1965 Ford Bronco.
In local schools back then, a few years after AK Statehood, Alaska
History was taught as part of public schools curriculum by former
'Territorial School System' teachers; who came to Alaska with their
own books and supplies. And went to remote areas on and off road
and knew more than simple book learning; most grew up on farms
lived in semi rural farm communities; & plenty hands on experience.
Dad wanted better than a Jeep. He bought a barebones Bronco
without back seat, and hunted from the Denali Highway; as that
had been the only drivable road into central Interior AK, back in
the days where one could walk into a sea of caribou and direct
traffic, to sent few into your hunting camp, along that dirt Hwy.
Most we knew were multi-task individuals, few NRA, fewer non-vets.
And they were of the greatest American generation, built on the
backs of where they lived and what they chose to learn & teach.
We still believe in a wider view than current circumstance allows.
But naming already named mountains here is hardly new; and
misnaming by newcomers is very old here in wilderness Alaska.
And carries with it, feeling of over-reach and bureaucratic smell.
PS: belated lengthy reply here, seems to include ideas added
to thread not in evidence when my construct initially began
Sorry for any apparent duplicate effort.
