Mojave-'system' takes up 800gb, why?

Hi,

Thanks for reading. 😊

Update: went to 'user library' and did 'get info' on each folder and found

'screen recordings' over 600gb. deleted them

now 213 gb system, still too much.

Orig question:

Very large 'system' - the large grey part: 768 gb

Does anyone have any idea how to clear this amount of gb?

Thanks so much, really appreciate . More info below

this is new updated graph:

Details:

imovie - 15.81 gb

list of things listed in above vertical image equal about 120gb (which are not all counted as 'system'):

it is not after effects - deleted all that

  • deleted AE cache and purge
  • delted screen recordings
  • did search for large files

iCloud: accessible via web in icloud.com

photos and video - 1.1gb

mail - 650 mb - only recent, today for example

docs - 1mb

❤️ ❤️ ❤️

You can’t directly manage the contents of this category. That is done by macOS. The category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

What you can do…

• Empty the Trash in the Dock.

• Empty the trash in the Photos app.

• Delete unused and unneeded application installers from your downloads folder and desktop.

• Reboot your Mac at least weekly.

• Transfer files that you don’t use daily to an external drive and then delete them from the startup drive and empty the trash. Files that take up the most room are movies, images and music.

• Force Time Machine to delete local snapshots:

• Use Disk Utility to delete APFS snapshots:

You can also use apps such as DaisyDisk from Software Ambience (also available in the App Store) or OmniDiskSweeper from Omni Labs.  (I’m unaffiliated with both.) Once you've located these larger user files, you can relocate them to another drive and/or delete them if they aren't needed.
