There are many versions of the iPhone Pro that are sold in different markets (mainly with minor changes due to local restrictions/law/etc.)

Without knowing your specific version, it's impossible to tell, but https://www.frequencycheck.com/country-compatibility/MnNRM/japan/devices?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q%5Bfull_name_cont%5D=iPhone+15+pro&q%5Bdevice_brand_id_eq%5D=1&commit=Search gives a breakdown of the different iPhone models and how well they mesh with Japan's frequencies.

A separate (bigger?) issue may be carrier support - if your carrier has a presence in Japan, or if you'll be on their roaming plan. You may want to consider getting a SIM in Japan to give your phone a local connection to avoid roaming fees.

I am assuming that your phone is not carrier locked.

Yes, if you contact a carrier in Japan and get set up with them.

A much simpler.....but likely a bit more expensive.....option would be to check with your current carrier to see if they have an International Plan option.

Most carriers now have competitive roaming plans; both AT&T and Verizon have plans that cost $10 for any day where you use roaming, with a $100 a month ceiling. Considering the cost of a trip to Japan that cost would get lost in the noise. T-Mobile, for its Magenta plans, has worldwide data and text roaming included, and calls for 25¢ a minute.

These prices are competitive with getting a local SIM (or eSIM), and are more convenient because you can use the same number worldwide.

OTOH, if you are going to be in Japan for a long time you might be better off with the local SIM.

The plane lands, you turn on your phone, and viola! You are already connected to a carrier, so you can check email, check messages, make calls, etc.

While all of that is correct, all iPhones have enough common bands so they will work anywhere in the world.

I have used AT&T's International option a number of times on trips to Europe and will continue to do so because it just makes things much simpler.

Cost wise, I just fold the phone service into the general fund for cabs, tips, meals, etc rather than worry about where every Euro or local currency is going. But.....I am well aware that some users watch every nickel, or whatever they call it over there.

Right now, we are trying to figure out why you need a UK Visa if all that you are doing is changing planes and staying airside at Heathrow.
