Unable to connect Apple Thunderbold Display to M4 Mac Mini 2024

As a user, I can confirm TB display, with the correct adapter (I have been working on TB displays, over 1 dozen) - it WILL work on TB 4 and TB 3 protocol.

Again, the non-function TB display can be the 1. cable or 2. Logic board and rarely 3. power supply.

Most of people experienced - such as TB display worked on such as 2015 machine (equipped with TB 2) but NOT working on TB3 device - once more, likely from the fluctuation of signal that MacOS will shut it off - the old connector/Octopus cable problem.

Quick and easy work around has been mentioned here - see the link at the end.

However, I want to put this into contend as user.

Please refer to the screen shots below:

A. I connected the TB Display behind the OWC TB3 Hub

B. I connected the TB Display direct to TB 4 equipped MacBook Pro

Both setups worked - plus I can daisy-chain both TB Displays with this MacBook Pro.

In addition, these kind of set-ups work on TB 4 Hub (both OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock and Caldigit TS4 dock).

In my experience, TB displays (I have tried over 1 dozen of them and 100% rate) with right adapter, will work on TB 3 and TB 4 Mac devices.

But the variables can be a daunting tasks if involved logic board and power supply (hope it's not your case).

For cable issues, should be an easy exploration.

If your Thunderbolt Display's hydra cable is somewhat flaky, the display might "work" with the 2015 MBP (assuming that MBP is more tolerant of errors), but get cut off by the M4 Mac mini.

A workaround I have seen suggested for a bad hydra cable is to get a Thunderbolt 1/2 cable, and run it from the TB2 side of the Apple TB 3-to-2 adapter into the TB daisy-chaining port on the Thunderbolt Display (leaving the built-in cable disconnected and unused).

I don't know whether a flaky cable is the issue, or whether bypassing the cable will fix your problem, but this seems more likely than the M4 Mac mini being incompatible with Thunderbolt 3 gear!

I have few TB displays and TB4 equipped Macs - there are some caveat regarding the connection issues between TB displays and newer Macs (TB3 or TB4).

Sounds to me like whoever you got at Apple Support was a front-line person who had no clue as to what they were talking about.

There can be some subtle differences between Thunderbolt 3 and 4 with respect to how TB3 docks and TB4 docks divide up bandwidth. (When I read Other World Computing – Blog – What’s the Difference Between Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4?, those differences came as a big surprise to me.)

Apple helped Intel to develop the original Thunderbolt standard – but Intel is in charge of Thunderbolt now. What does Intel say?

Keep your hopes down and wild goose chases in check: M4 Macs are excluded from the compatibility list Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple.

If you think that’s a typo, think again. Downward compatibility is also not mentioned in the Mini’s spec. Again, not an accidental omission, but dependable spec-fact and also btw completely legit. Apple is not obligated to support downward compatibility and in this instance has chosen by design not to.

The internet will agree with any theory. You have the official answer from Apple - TB3 is not supported, which is also your experience. Furthermore, Apple provides no adapters to down convert TB4.

You are free to contact the internet authors for assistance with unsupported/unverified hacks, but not here thankfully. Sorry! It is what it is.

I do not know where to buy a Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2 cable these days. Just that this is the cable you would need.

These cables have Mini DisplayPort connectors on the ends (because TB1 and TB2 used those connectors), but were built to higher standards and were more expensive.

You’re right - I got the head counts backwards. I wish I could edit that part of my post so it doesn’t confuse someone else by accident.

The Thunderbolt Display’s cable is two-headed; the LED Cinema Display’s is three-headed (USB being the third head).
