iPadOS 18.3.1 killed 2 iPads

iPad Air 3rd Gen 64GB WiFi only

iPad Air M2 (2024) 512 GB WiFi only

Has anyone had issues with the iPadOS 18.3.1 update? It has now rendered 2 of my iPads unusable. I tried to update both while connected to my Mac using Finder. The update fails (error 9) and then the iPad can only boot to recovery mode. I was on the phone with Apple Support for hours trying to recover the 3rd Gen. Nothing worked (update, restore, swapping cables/ports, turning off AV, firewall). I was told to bring to a qualified tech for factory reset. Geek Squad tried to factory reset the Gen 3 3 times and said they couldn't, so I purchased the M2 this week. This morning, the same exact thing happened to it when trying to update to iPadOS 18.3.1. It too now can only boot to recovery mode. So, I am now left with 2 very expensive paper weights.

Any assistance would be great but seems like a buggy release to me. I plan to take them both to a Genius bar today and may just ask for an exchange of the M2 since it less than a week old.

Thank you!

Using a Mac or Windows PC to perform a system software update, when device storage is insufficient, can indeed be helpful. Using this method allows the update package to be downloaded, unpacked and verified on the computer before installing the update on the target device.

Installing directly requires significantly more free space - as the package is initially downloaded, unpacked and verified on the target device - and still requires free space to actually install.

Notwithstanding the above, consistent failure to update using your Mac suggests that something is amiss with the Mac computer.

I've had a terrible experience with the IPadOS 18.3.1 update. My IPad's screen went completely grey despite the device clearly still being on and being picked up by laptop. Then three quarters of the screen came back, disappeared again, then it worked for a bit and then back to three quarters of the screen. Took in to an IStore, which recommended I replace the device, because it's a "hardware" issue only for it to work the next day again. Now I'm sadly stuck again with only three quarters of the screen working.

iPadOS 18.3.1 is stable. While there will always be isolated instances of difficulties installing any update, there are no widespread issues with iPadOS 18.3.1.

Given that you have consistently unsuccessfully updated multiple iPads - and consistently rendered each unusable - it may be reasonable to question your methodology in performing the update.

Is there a specific reason to avoid performing an system software update directly from iPad settings - as opposed to attempting (and failing) to successfully update the devices using your Mac computer?

my iPad air 4th gen now has constant issues in nearly every app where I have to type, the cursor goes everywhere and I can only do emails on my iphone 16 which has also got issues. I cannot use Youtube properly as the video constantly fast forwards and I cannot stop this. What is going on? rebooted both. what a buggy ios!!!

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I use the MAC to perform the update because the iPad and iPhone (I have not had issues updating the iPhone using the same method) only have 64GB and there was always a fight for space (Apple store confirmed that updating from the MAC requires less space on the handheld devices). I took the iPads to the Apple store today, and they could not recover either one. The old one was recycled and I exchanged the M2 for a new one. This one has 512 GB so going forward, I will perform the update from the iPad itself. At this point, I suspect the backup brought some corruption to the new iPad, so this time I will start from scratch and not restore any backup. Will be a pain, but killing these iPads is worse and I'd prefer to start clean.

Thanks again and good to know that 18.3.1 is stable!

Update: I activated the new iPad M2 and set it up with my Apple ID from scratch - did not restore any backup. The first thing I did was update to 18.3.1 from the iPad itself and this completed successfully. I am now in the tedious process of customizing it to my liking as I had before and downloading all of my apps etc.
