Hello !
I just wonder if its possible and workable, to install a os and boot from it, on an external drive -
using the Apple Thunderbolt 1 / 2 adapter (to USB C Thunderbolt 3.)
Requiring a Thunderbolt 2 cable from the mac to the female side of the adapter.
Provided the external drive is selfpowered ?
I know it should work in theory but is it working ?

Earlier Mac models
I would get a USB 3 External Hard Disk or SSD and create your boot drive on that. The drive I'd recommend is the OWC Mercury Elite Pro enclosure along with a high quality SSD and then follow the steps in How to setup an external SSD as your startup disk.

The 2012 iMac supports USB 3 and a USB 3 External SSD will be faster and more reliable than a cobbled up Thunderbolt connection.

I worried a little that the USB would be more CPU intensive ?
But I definitively see the logic in the TB 3 adapter + extra cable + drive,
would be somewhat of a hack ! :-)
