Airpods 4 not pairing with Macbook Pro M4

I have a new Macbook Pro M4 MAX, which I want to use my Airpods 4 with. While I can get my iPhone 16 Pro to recognize them for pairing, the Macbook (MacOS Sequoia) will not recognize them. I have turned off/on bluetooth on the M4, plugged the case in directly -- literally sat the Airpods in their case, with case open right on the M4 and nothing.

I'm very disappointed. How can I fix this?
