Look at the Tech Specs (look on Apple's website) of the mouse to see if your Mac may be too old. What Apple shows on their website for the current Magic Mouse is the following:

System Requirements

Mac with macOS 15.1 or later

iPad with iPadOS 18.1 or later

Is the Mac running MacOS 15.1 or later?? If it isn't either update the computer's' version of Mac OS or it it cannot run 15.1 or later please return the mouse and buy another brand of mouse that is compatible with the version of Mac OS installed on the computer.
