Automatic Backup on the locked iphone if I forgot a passcode

Hi. I forgot the passcode and now there is only one try left before the phone locks permanently. I had only 5gb of the phone data backup at the moment I forgot the passcode. Now I updated my plan to 200gb and wonder if the phone could automatically backup the data if connected to wifi and charging.

If you set up the phone to back up automatically to iCloud, you would have seen constant messages about backups not being able to run.....because there was not enough space on iCloud.

Was that still the case up until the time that you forgot the passcode? In the last day or so....before you added more storage on iCloud......did you see a message about backups not being able to run?

If yes, automatic backups were already enabled, so the new backup might run, but you will have to wait a day or two to find out if the complete backup of your phone actually completed by logging on to iCloud from your computer or another device to check the size of the backup file.

However, if you turned off automatic iCloud backups to stop the messages about not enough storage space, then there is no way for you to turn automatic backups back on, since you cannot get into the phone to change the setting.

iCloud backup of an iPhone occurs automatically when specific conditions are met. The device must be:

  1. Locked – The screen should not be in use or active.
  2. Connected to Wi-Fi – A stable Wi-Fi network with internet access is required. Cellular data is not used for automatic iCloud backups.
  3. Plugged into Power – The iPhone must be charging, preferably using an Apple-certified cable and adapter to ensure proper power delivery.

Additionally, the backup process depends on the iPhone being enabled and functional. If the device is disabled due to multiple incorrect passcode attempts or other security restrictions, automatic backups may not occur. Similarly, if the iCloud storage is full or there is an issue with the Apple ID authentication, the backup might fail.

It might be worth a try. I would suggest leaving the phone connected to power and to Wi-Fi Internet service for a while (as in, for at least one night) to let it make another backup and/or catch up in iCloud synchronization.

If you were using iCloud Photos, I would suggest logging into the iCloud Web interface (https://www.icloud.com/) to check on synchronization progress. That might let you avoid resetting the phone before it had uploaded your latest photos. If you were not using iCloud Photos, you won't be able to see any photos that might be backed up until you restore the backup.

This assumes that you had automatic iCloud backups and/or iCloud synchronization enabled. If you didn't, there isn't any way to turn them on now.
