Unable to restore iPad

Due to lack of storage space, I tried to use iTunes on my laptop to download and instal a recent iOS update on my partner’s iPad (6th gen?). Fortunately the initial backup went OK but then when downloading the OS update iTunes crashed. This has left the iPad in a suspended state. All that appears on the screen now is the Apple logo, then followed by the graphic of a Lightning connector pointing towards a screen and at the top of the screen it says “support.apple.com/ipad/restore”. Despite trying all the standard ways of reviving the iPad through different button sequences, I just can’t get any further. It’s as if the iTunes crash has put the iPad into suspended animation. Has anyone any idea what’s going on here and how I might revive the iPad? Thanks.

Your attempted update failed - and the iPad indicates that it must now be restored:

If you see the Restore screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

These support pages outline the available methods to restore an iPad - either from a backup, or to Factory Settings:

Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch from a backup – Apple Support

Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod to factory settings – Apple Support

Restore all content to iPad from a backup - Apple Support

You’ll need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed - or for Windows 10/11, the more recent Apple Devices App) or a Mac computer (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS).

Download and use iTunes for Windows – Apple Support

Update to the latest version of iTunes – Apple Support

Apple Devices App (Windows PC):

Use of a PC or Mac computer is unavoidable. If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) will be delighted to assist.

Having tried everything suggested, what did you learn from the technicians at your local Apple Store or AASP?

Apple doesn't appear to list error #1109. You might be best advised to seek seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from another Apple device using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
