How do I fix iPhone being reported as lost or stolen?

I bought a brand new iPhone Xs Max that I was using in the US before I traveled out of the country. It was locked to the AT&T network; now I am trying to unlock it, and they are telling me my phone has been reported as lost or stolen. I am the 1st owner of the phone so how did it get reported as lost or stolen and how do I get it out of that lost or stolen condition to get it unblocked?

Sorry, nothing that Apple can do to help out this one. You will have to try to work things out with AT&T.

Apple cannot lock or unlock a phone, and they would never report a phone as stolen since they do not get involved with lost or stolen phones.

It's probably a mix up with IMEI on the phone. Ask for a senior support person at AT&T. The normal crew is just reading stuff off the screen in front of them.
