iPhone Mail app showing incorrect unread count & weird layout

I don't know what happened. The mail app on my iPhone got borked. I am using it with multiple email accounts and since about a week ago, the app icon shows number of unread messages that is totally off. It may be showing 1 but when I open it, the email list shows 5 unread messages.

Also the mail list looks weird. It's all messed up with some icons on the left. What is that?

I was really relying on it. How do I fix it?

Oh wow, that's great! Thanks! IDK, how did I manage to enable all that. But anyway, your suggestions resolved it. Mainly the badge icon is now showing the correct number of unread messages.

For the unread mail showing incorrectly, make sure you have the badge count to show for all mail accounts. You do that by going to Settings > Apps > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications, and make sure it is set to All Unread Messages.

There may be a couple of other settings you want to change depending on how you want your emails to appear:

Remove Contact Photos by going to Settings > Apps > Mail > Show Contact Photos.
Turn off Categories by tapping the 3 dot icon on top of page when viewing your emails and choose List View.
