Delete messages on Mac but NOT on iPhone

I own multiple apple devices and am struggling with everything being duplicated across multiple devices and clogging up ridiculous amounts of storage.

I need to remove the messages that are on my Mac to free up space. I don't want these deleted off my iPhone - I just don't want 3 or 4 copies (plus iCloud backup) of everything.

Is this possible? If it is possible how do I do it?

It would be nice to be able to continue to respond to text messages using my Mac, but without the storage-hogging long term copies. However, if the only option is to delete the app to get the storage I am willing to do that.

This question has been posted before - but I could not find clear answers. To answer the questions that were asked on other threads I found.

How much space? Too much. Enough that it is causing me issues.

Do I really want to do this? Yes, yes I really do. I have no use for being able to look at old messages on my computer, I have a phone for that. It is nice to be able to respond to a current conversation as I type quicker with a keyboard than using my phone.

Doesn't this defeat the point? It doesn't work for me - it may work for others, but it is not helpful for me. Personally I would prefer to be able to keep devices quite separate and decide what happens on each one individually.

Hello Esmerelda_,

Let me walk you through the steps to achieve this setup:

Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support

  • On your Mac go to Messages -> Settings... -> iMessage
  • Turn off Enable Messages in iCloud
  • Select Disable This Device (only your Mac will stop syncing to iCloud), or Disable All (all messages will be stored on-device for all of your devices)

You can always double-check which devices are backing up Messages to iCloud by following these steps:

  • Go to Settings/System Settings -> (your name) Apple Account -> iCloud
  • Under Saved to iCloud select See All -> Messages in iCloud
  • Enable or disable for each device

Now you can safely delete messages on your Mac, and they will NOT be deleted from your iPhone (rest assured that I have also tried this). Furthermore, if you want to have messages forwarded from your iPhone to your Mac, see "Text message forwarding" in this article: Forward text messages from your iPhone to other devices - Apple Support.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Have a nice day!

Okay, ASC lost my post. Again. Retyping, so might be a little terse.

iCloud Messages syncs across all devices. Deleting in one place deletes everywhere. The copies of messages are in iCloud.

iCloud backup does not back up iCloud Messages (again), because those messages are already in iCloud.
