Transferring files from one Mac to Another on thumb drives

Hello - I have just acquired a refurbished Macbook Air from 2019 - My old one was 2015 - I want to transfer files - Would it work if I plug in a USB on the older computer and use a dual connecting cable - USC in this case - to transfer the files? Thank you!

It would be best to connect a proper external drive to the old MacBook and let Time Machine do a backup. Then take that backup and connect it to the new Mac and recover the files using Migration Assistant. Finally, continue to use the external drive on the new MacBook and let Time Machine continue to do regular backups.

But specific to your question, yes, you can transfer files from one Mac to another using thumb drives, but it will be slow.
