CarPlay no longer starts with last used app

I used to be, when CarPlay started up, it would automatically start doing what it was doing when it shut down. For example, if I was listening to the music in my library when it shut down, the next time it started up it would automatically bring up that screen and start playing. I think this stopped when iOS 17 came out.

I was comparing notes with another user on my car's owners forum. We both have the exact same Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL - the only thing different is the color. We both have iPhones - his is a 13, mine is a 12. We're both running iOS 18.3.1. We both have the car's options configured the same way. When his CarPlay starts, it automatically start playing the music and brings up that screen. When mine starts, it starts with the home screen display of icons. Then I have to select music, which comes up paused, then I have to select play.

Why doesn't this software work the same for everyone all the time?
